PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin)

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) therapy involves extracting the autologous platelet concentrate prepared from the patient's own blood. PRF is rich in fibrin, platelets, white blood cells, and growth factors that help patients heal faster, control inflammation, reduce post op pain, and produce more predictable and favorable results from dental surgery.

Method:

There are many applications and techniques for which PRF is harvested and applied. First, blood is drawn from the patient's veins into a vacutainer. Then, the blood samples are placed in a centrifuge and spun at high speeds to separate the PRF from the rest of the hemoglobin solution. The separated PRF can then be implemented and applied in various ways to help achieve better, predictable results in surgery.

Applications:

The architecture of the PRF in trapping cytokines and growth factors, along with the leukocyte content, play an essential role in its ability to accelerate healing. These autologous fibrin clots and platelet concentrates mirror the effects of proper bleeding from a surgical site — that is, they allow the site to form a good fibrin clot, stimulate neoangiogenesis, and provide the architecture for leukocytes to protect the area from infection and clean debris. This circumnavigates issues with lack of clotting or controlled bleeding from the surgical site. Thus, the platelet rich fibrin acts as a blood clot and barrier membrane, where the blood clot must first be stabilized, and a barrier must be created.

PRF can also be used as a temporary membrane that can promote faster soft tissue healing. The release of growth factor allows for quicker remodeling of soft tissues when L-PRF is used as a protective membrane.

PRF can also be mixed with grafting materials such as bone graft particulates. The mixture will then contain the growth factors, white blood cells, and fibrin to help supercharge the bone graft to yield more predictable results.

At Smiles Beyond Dentistry, we offer this unique service in conjunction to our surgeries to help improve patient recovery and yield better surgical results ranging from more predictable bone graft, implants, to better post op recovery from wisdom teeth extractions.
